Behind me, the door swings shut with a groan that resounds down the dimly lit hall.
I take a deep breath and push aside the nagging sense of unease.
Hushed voices, crazed laughter, and faint crying sounds reach my ears as I pass by the rooms lining the corridor.
I try not to think about what may be happening behind those doors.
I'm in
no position to
take on anyone else's
problems right
now.
Judging
by the room
numbers, I must
be on the 4th
floor...
425, 424, 423, 422... The numbers are decreasing.
The pattern
suggests I’m likely headed toward an elevator or a staircase.
It's a-a looooovelyyyy nniiiight we’re haviiinng...
The familiar voice cuts through the air, halting me in my tracks.
Two shadowed figures loom in the hall ahead of me: a spindly form resembling the one I saw at the door earlier, and a second, towering, broad-shouldered silhouette that seems to take up the entire narrow hallway.

The new voice rumbles in a low register, its sound reverberating like it was spoken from the depths of a cavern, as the larger of the two forms steps menacingly towards the other.
…l-looovely niiiiiigg-ght-t...
The hallway is pierced with a blood-curdling scream as the massive figure grabs the smaller one in what looks like a crushing embrace.
Wet snapping sounds join the screams. I clap my hands over my ears as the thin body is bent in half at the spine, thin limbs twisting and thrashing helplessly.
Paralyzed by fear, I press myself into one of the doorways as the screams grow fainter and further away.
HA...
HA...
HA...
After what feels like an eternity, the hallway falls silent, save for my own ragged breaths. I open my eyes and cautiously lean forward to peek down the corridor.
The two figures I saw earlier are nowhere in sight, which somehow makes me feel even worse.

I whirl around to find the hulking figure standing in the hall I'd just come from, blocking my path back to the office.
How did
they get past
without me
noticing?
They shine a flashlight in my face and I flinch back, raising my hands against the blinding beam of light.
Through squinted eyes, their face remains hidden in shadow, but I can make out a security uniform. My heart races as I recall Anne's warning about the security team.
...Are you Oliver?
The figure advances wordlessly, moving under one of the overhead lights.
It’s at that moment I realize it’s not a shadow I saw on their face, but a dark void where human features should be.
The guard's voice echoes from the hollow darkness.
YOU.
DON'T. BELONG.
HERE.
I turn and sprint down the hall as fast as my legs will carry me.
YOU'LL.
BE. SORRY.
The faceless officer's heavy footsteps close in fast. I set my sights on the glowing exit sign at the end of the hall.
Reaching the door, I slam my body against the crash bar and stumble into the stairwell. The loud clang reverberates in the confined space as I dash down the steps two at a time.

My lungs burn as I run down yet another dingy corridor.
The sounds of pursuit have faded. I look back over my shoulder and see that I'm alone, but I don't slow down.

Facing forward again, I'm blinded by the beam of another flashlight.
The glint of a security badge nearly stops my heart.
They've
caught me!
I skid to a halt, but it's too late, and I collide with the officer. The impact is softer than I’d expected, but it still sends me sprawling backward, my head striking the ground with a dull thud.
NGH!!
The floor creaks ominously as the imposing figure approaches, and I struggle to sit up. The world spins around me. All I can do is curl into a protective ball with my arms over my head.
Whoa,
hey, are you
alright?

The voice is a soothing tenor, much different than the rumbling hollow voice from before. I slowly lower my arms, squinting up at my aggressor.
...Kogan,
is that you?
The officer crouches, maintaining a respectful distance, and a round, concerned face comes into view.
...How
do you know
my name?
Oh...
sorry, you
probably don't
remember me.
My
name is
Oliver.
